Between May 7th -12th, 2024, AS Ankara had the opportunity to receive EUROAVIA members from all around Europe for the One World One Fight Symposium, an event focused on the challenges faced in the aerospace industry by individuals such as gender discrimination, racism. The symposium aims to emphasize a collective effort to address global issues such as sustainability in the aerospace industry, security concerns faced in both civil and military aviation and problems faced in international joint projects.
On the arrival day, May 7th, we had the welcome dinner where went to a classic Turkish Kebap restaurant and introduced our guests to Turkish cuisine. After dinner, we had a little tour in the city centre, we explored the places where the students commonly hangout.
During May 8th, participants were concentrated on the seminars of the symposium, where they had the opportunity to deepen their understandings of the usage of wind tunnels and supercomputers for Computer Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the aerospace industry. Participants also had the chance to discuss their own ideas with each other and the speakers. As we came to an end for the first day, our sponsors, Space Camp Turkey and iGA Academy did their presentations. To end the day, we paid a visit to Anıtkabir, which is the memorial site of Türkiye’s founding father. On our way to the Anıtkabir we had a little stop at 7. Cadde which is the most famous street in the city and ate some Turkish street food.
On May 9th, the second day of the symposium, the participants learned about the Europe’s sustainable aviation, workplace gender discrimination and women in aviation and, the importance of the space situational awareness and the space debris. After the seminars we had a visit to our university’s museum, while we were on our way to the museum, we got the chance to check out the the Motorsport Days, and event organised by our university, where we had the chance to see old racing cars from 80s, rally cars and a little presentation from our university’s Formula Racing team. In the museum we saw an old C-47 from the Second World War and some very cool jets such as the RF-4, the F-104 and a bunch of old American cars from the 30s. In the museum we also had the chance to inspect an old fighter jet’s engine. To end this intense day, we had the cultural night, where we spend a great time together.
From May 10th to the 12th, the participants explored the beautiful capital of Türkiye, Ankara and our university’s facilities. We visited the three of the most famous museums in the city where we had the chance to see artifacts from the oldest settled civilization who lived in Göbeklitepe. After visiting the museum, we climbed to the castle of Ankara and admired the great view of the city from the top of the castle which is on the highest point of the capital. Furthermore, we explored the beautiful campus of our university and had a little tour on the RÜZGEM, one of the biggest wind tunnels in the world. We also wandered around the hangar where our technical teams work in and learned the process of making composite materials parts. Finally, we showed the participants our department, the labs and our association’s room along our collection of aviation materials, some of which date back to the 60s.
During the week participants also discovered the Turkish cuisine to its deepest.
