As part of our activities, EUROAVIA Athens had the unique opportunity to visit the Control Tower of Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” as well as the Air Traffic Control Center in Elliniko, gaining valuable insights into the operations and challenges of air traffic control.
During the tours, we were extensively informed about the pivotal role of air traffic controllers in managing flights, ensuring aircraft safety, and coordinating take-offs, landings, and traffic in the airspace, thereby ensuring the smooth flow of aircraft.
At the control tower, we closely observed the procedures for flight guidance, the communication between controllers and pilots, and the real-time management of the airport. We were informed about the technologies used for monitoring the airspace and learned about the emergency response procedures, security protocols, and the technical features of the flight control systems.

At the Air Traffic Control Center, we learned about the processes of managing flights on a national level, as well as the technologies used to monitor aircraft in Greek airspace. At the same time, we discussed the challenges they face, such as the need to modernize equipment to meet the increasing demands of aviation, especially in our country, which attracts a continuously growing volume of air traffic every year.
We warmly thank the staff of both services for their hospitality, the detailed information they provided, and their willingness to share their experiences with us! This visit offered us a unique perspective on the importance of air traffic control in ensuring the safety and smooth operation of flights, as well as the critical role of controllers in the efficient functioning of aviation.
