May 2025 Update from AS Castelldefels

May 25, 2025May 25, 2025 by Communication WG

AS Castelldefels is pleased to share its latest activities. Firstly, our annual trip this year was to Munich (Germany), where we explored an incredible city and met fellow EUROAVIANs. During our visit, we went to the ESA-DLR facilities, the BMW Museum, Nymphenburg Palace, the Deutsches Museum and the Allianz Arena. We would like to thank FIB Leo Buchner, who gave us an incredible tour around the city and showed us the ropes for an authentic Bavarian dinner.

With the beginning of the school year, the leisure activities gave way to the academic ones. Our latest visits include the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre, which hosts one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers, the MareNostrum 4. We were also fortunate to visit ENAIRE’s Gavà Control Centre, where the air traffic controllers give coverage for more than 300.000 km2. It was incredible to visit the control tower and observe how ATC really works.

Finally, we would like to share a bit of our culture. Sant Jordi, celebrated on April 23rd, is one of the most beautiful and beloved traditions in Catalonia. It is often called our version of Valentine’s Day, but with a unique twist: instead of just exchanging gifts, following the legend of Saint George, people exchange roses and books as symbols of affection and appreciation, since the relationship with literature is even bigger. Since 1988, UNESCO has recognised the 23rd of April as World Book Day, since it also has great significance for great writers like Cervantes or Shakespeare. Our small contribution has been a public talk by our professors, Pilar Gil and Jordi Gutierrez, who have shared the story of the Mercury 13 and Space and sustainability, respectively. We would like to thank them and invite everybody to celebrate this beautiful day by presenting a rose and a book to their loved ones.

After Sant Jordi, it was time for the most awaited leisure event organised annually on campus: the Castelldefesta. Alongside another association, many of our members spend a day full of activities such as sports and video game tournaments. A popular lunch with paella and butifarra for more than 200 people, concerts in the afternoon with a live rock band and DJs, a food truck for dinner and a lot of games and activities. It really was a success, with more than 500 attendees.

To top things off, we wrapped up the academic year by participating in AEROTELECOM 2025, one of Spain’s leading student fairs for aerospace and telecommunications. This edition featured over 35 companies and was extra special for us as we gear up to take over as organisers next year. It is a huge step for AS Castelldefels and EUROAVIA International, with trusted partners like Airbus, Vueling, AENA, ENAIRE, and many others ready to join us again. We can’t wait to make it even bigger!
