On October 25th, AS Ankara successfully hosted Space Days, an exciting new that connects aerospace enthusiasts with professionals and leading companies from Turkey’s rapidly growing space industry. The event provided a dynamic platform for knowledge-sharing and networking, enabling participants to exchange ideas, gain insights into cutting-edge developments, and explore career opportunities within the industry.
Morning Sessions
Attitude Determination and Control systems developed by Plan-S
The day began with a compelling seminar by Plan-S, a Turkish satellite company focused on Attitude Determination and Control Systems (ADCS). Gökhan Özdöğan and Özgür Ökçü, experts from Plan-S, did a deep dive into the research and development process behind their innovative systems and subsystems. Their presentation offered participants a unique behind-the-scenes view of satellite technology, demonstrating how ADCS functions to stabilise and orient satellites in space.
In addition to the technical insights, the duo also shared Plan-S’s ambitious roadmap. Their plans include launching three more satellites into geostationary orbit (GEO) while enhancing their Internet of Things (IoT) and Earth Observation technologies. This session not only showcased the company’s technological advancements but also inspired the audience with the vision of Turkey’s expanding role in space exploration.
A Lecture on Spacecraft Structures
The second session featured Asst. Prof. Dr. Görkem Eğemen Güloğlu who presented a lecture on spacecraft structures. The talk, essentially an abstract of a core aerospace engineering course, provided students with a foundational understanding of the structural design and mechanics of spacecraft. This session offered attendees, especially undergraduate students, a valuable preview of what they could expect in advanced academic studies and research in aerospace engineering.
Afternoon Sessions
Career Pathways in Aerospace
Following a short break, the event transitioned into an engaging three-hour panel discussion led by two prominent figures in the field: former JPL member Dr. Umut Yıldız, an astrophysicist and current Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Plan-S, and Bilge Kaçmaz, a research engineer at Pulsar Fusion. Dr. Yıldız and Kaçmaz shared their diverse career experiences and expertise with the audience.
The panel focused on the career pathways for aerospace engineers both locally and internationally. They explored opportunities in Turkey’s expanding space sector as well as prospects in Europe and the United States. Topics included the challenges and rewards of pursuing advanced degrees, the importance of internships and networking, and the critical skills needed to thrive in a global aerospace industry. Attendees left the session with a clear understanding of how to navigate their professional journey, whether aiming for research, development, or industry roles.
Space Days was not just an event but a significant step towards fostering collaboration and innovation in Turkey’s space ecosystem. By bringing together students, professionals, and industry leaders, AS Ankara succeeded in creating a vibrant hub for learning, inspiration, and opportunity. For students aspiring to contribute to the aerospace field, this event provided a launchpad for building connections and pursuing their dreams.
