The Journey of The Aestro Magazine from AS Istanbul

May 25, 2025May 25, 2025 by Communication WG

At the end of the year 2020, when we were still facing the global pandemic COVID-19, we decided to create an online magazine focused on aviation and space. Our aim was to share the developments, discoveries and research in these fields with our community, also as a way of staying connected to the world.  The first issue was prepared with great enthusiasm and dedication, being published in February 2021. However, unexpected challenges forced us to pause. The extended quarantine of COVID-19 made it almost impossible to work on The Aestro Magazine since it prevented us from getting together, finding new members, and creating a solid team for the future of the magazine.

Nevertheless, we were able to publish the second issue in March 2022. However, a horrifying earthquake hit Turkey in 2023.  Also affecting many students and their families and causing all lectures and activities at the university to be put on hold. Since then, bringing the magazine back, despite every challenge, has always been a part of our agenda.

Now, after a two-year break, we are proud to present the third issue of Aestro in April 2025.

To bring this issue to life, we launched an open call for volunteer writers at the beginning of this academic year. We were able to create a team of 19 writers, bigger and more collaborative than ever, with our secretary, Muhammed Emin Özcan, being the chief editor. After almost 6 months of hard work, the third issue of The Aestro Magazine was published in April 2025, covering a wide range of topics. This issue covers breathtaking articles on recent developments, research and discoveries such as the Starship project, Parker Solar Probe, Aviation Simulators, Race car aerodynamics and more. Also, including a special interview on aircraft spotting.

Last but not least, Aestro is no longer just a project of the past. We are currently in the process of building a new core team of writers, editors and designers for the magazine to ensure its continuity and further growth.
