Supersonic Flight and the Concorde: The rise and fall of commercial supersonic aviation from AS Bordeaux
The dream of supersonic flight has long captivated the aviation industry, promising faster travel times and a futuristic vision of air transportation. The Concorde, a marvel of engineering, brought that dream to life by achieving speeds over twice the speed of sound. However, the story of commercial supersonic flight is one of both triumph and tragedy, with the Concorde’s rise marked by innovation and its fall shaped by economic and environmental challenges.
September 2024 Update from AS Castelldefels
During the past months, in AS Castelldefels we enjoyed several (very) interesting activities! In May, we got the opportunity to visit the main railway operation and maintenance facilities in Catalonia, FGC. We learned the basics of how trains are maintained and repaired, and how electricity is driven through the whole railway network to make the biggest renewable-source public transport system of the region do wonders!
Chapter 5 – The foundation of modern EUROAVIA (1990-1999)
With the introduction of the new Statutes and Bylaws, EUROAVIA showed a strong and unified image in Europe, being considered the top association for aerospace youth activities by winning awards like the “European Space Trophy”. Today’s EUROAVIA was shaped during the decade of the 1990s, which served as a period of strengthening and restructuring of the association.
Revival of EUROAVIA Leuven: A Year in Review
After a significant decline in activities during the COVID-19 pandemic, EUROAVIA Leuven lost much of its presence among students and within the international community. The lack of engagement, particularly in aerospace-related events beyond the classroom, was felt deeply by students. This dissatisfaction inspired four motivated individuals to take action and breathe new life into the organisation. What followed was a year full of revitalisation, enthusiasm, and an ambitious calendar of events. Here’s an overview of our first year back in action.
An EUROAVIA exclusive Guide on becoming an Astronaut from AS Munich
At the end of May 2024, EUROAVIA Munich had the honour of hosting German reserve astronaut Nicola Winter at the Technical University of Munich. Nicola, a former fighter pilot, aerospace engineer, Ph.D. candidate, and reserve astronaut, shared her experience of the journey from applying to the final selection process of becoming an astronaut with a group of young, motivated students who dream of one day becoming astronauts themselves.
The Black Box: How It Survives Crashes
When you hear about plane crashes, one of the first things investigators look for is the Black Box, also known as the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) or Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). Despite its name, the Black Box is not black at all. It is actually bright orange to make it easier to find in wreckage.
Air Horizons 2025 from AS Paris
AS Paris changed its local board at the end of June 2024 and we are pleased to present you: Julien Bordier, the president; and Andréa Rambourg, the vice president. Both are starting their 4th year at the EPF Engineering School in Aeronautics & Space master’s degree. They are both currently doing their internships at FutureLog (logistics) in Paris and the business jet airline Air Alsie in Denmark. The secretary Clément Perez and the treasurer Antoine Madej, are both in their 3rd year, and are therefore taking over.
AS Tampere Team Albatross’ journey to Air Cargo Challenge 2024
A few months have passed after the 2024 Air Cargo Challenge in Aachen, and it is a good time to look back at our journey in the competition.
AS Braunschweig visits A320 Flight Simulator
At the end of April this year, members of our local group in Braunschweig had the unique opportunity to visit the flight simulator at TU Braunschweig. This simulator offers an incredibly realistic replication of the cockpit of a modern Airbus A320 and is part of the Institute of Flight Guidance (IFF). Like the real aircraft, the simulator’s cockpit is equipped with two seats, reflecting the fact that the A320 is operated by two pilots. This setup allowed two participants to sit in the cockpit at a time, taking turns in the pilot’s seat.
